The Kalaa Store: Fashion with a Purpose

At The Kalaa Store, we believe that fashion is more than just style—it is a powerful medium to tell stories, spark change, and build a more inclusive world. Our mission goes beyond creating ready-to-wear crochet pieces; it is rooted in a larger vision of empowering women, championing sustainability, and reimagining the narrative of Indian craftsmanship on a global stage.

Women Empowerment

India ranks among the lowest globally in female labor force participation, with socio-cultural barriers and care-related responsibilities often limiting women’s access to financial independence. At The Kalaa Store, we seek to challenge these systemic inequities.

Through the Kalaa Sakhi Livelihood and Skilling Programme, we provide flexible, home-based work opportunities for women in underserved communities. This initiative allows women to balance family care duties while earning a dignified income.

Today, over 1,000 women from regions like Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh contribute to Kalaa’s creations. These artisans, many of whom live below the national poverty line, now earn up to ₹25,000 per month—a transformative income that redefines their roles within households and communities.

Sustainability at the Core

In a world dominated by fast fashion, The Kalaa Store is committed to promoting sustainable practices through every thread we use. Each crochet piece embodies slow fashion—handcrafted meticulously by skilled artisans using time-honored techniques.

We view our designs not as fleeting trends but as heirlooms—timeless pieces with a soul. Beyond the craft, we strive to amplify the voices of these artisans, placing the rural Indian woman at the forefront of global sustainability conversations. Her practices—repurposing end-of-life saris into rugs or reusing jars as oil lamps—reflect sustainable consumption and production in its purest form.

Through collaborations with brands like Netflix, Ed-a-Mamma, and YouTube Gaming, we’re bringing the stories of our artisans to a global stage. Each partnership amplifies our message and helps us expand our impact.
